ROYAL COAT OF ARMS OVERMANTEL
Circa1583
Well documented provenance
A unique 8ft 10in x 5ft x 13in 800lbs Oak Royal Overmantel
The overmantel shows Queen Elizabeth 1 Royal Arms (central shield) which she shared with predecessors Henry 1V (1367-1413) and Edward 1V (1442-1483). It bears the three Lions from Richard the Lionheart's Royal Arms (1157-1199) and the fleur-de-lis added by Edward 111 (1312-1377) to symbolise his claim to the French throne.
The latin Semper Eadem ("Always the same") was the personal motto of Queen Elizabeth 1, however the French, Dieu Et Mon Droit ("God and my right") was the more standard Royal motto and is depicted on the overmantel along with the French maxim, Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense ("shame on anyone who thinks evil of it") on the Garter that surrounds the Royal Arms.
The supporters of the shield are a Lion and Dragon representing England and Wales. A lyre and hanging fruit are positioned between the supporters and the Atlas and caryatid figures that form the outer supports of the overmantel.
